The Arenal Volcano is one of the most popular sights in Costa Rica, and many nature-lovers from all over the world visit this beautiful area. And if the Arenal Volcano is your destination, then you will most likely pass through the town of La Fortuna, a small community near one of the most threatening and active volanoes in Costa Rica. Although the lava of Arenal is not likely to reach La Fortuna, which is located 15 kilometers from the volcano, living in the shadow of this fire and ash spewing giant is not devoid of excitement. The Arenal Volcano National Park is the chief destination of tourists who wander into la Fortuna, but the town itself is also worth a second look. The volcano might have made the town famous, but La Fortuna is very much capable of being a travel destination on its own! Here are the top 5 things to do in La Fortuna.

Volcan Look Discoteque

The biggest discoteque outside of San Jose is located in this small town, and don’t think for one second that this is a provincial club with only a few quiet people hanging around: Volcan Look is a blast. The huge two-story disco is not open on weekdays, only on weekends and holidays, but when it is open it is always crowded. The fun begins after 11, son there is no use showing up earlier than that.

Eat sushi

Costa Rica’s La Fortuna seems like an unlikely place to eat sushi, but the open-air sushi restaurant at Springs Resort and Spa is worth a visit (after indulging in some local Costa Rican delicacies, of course). The sushi rolls are amazing, and some are the restaurant’s own creation. The resort is a bit far from the city center, but it is a lovely place and the sushi is definitely worth the ride.

Ecoglide Canopy Tour

If you ever wanted to swing from the trees like Tarzan, you can do so without risking to break your limbs. The Arenal Ecoglide Park has several attractions, one of which is actually called the Tarzan Swing. In addition to the healthy dose of adrenaline that you’ll get when gliding on cables over the lush forest, you also get the chance to observe wildlife and take picture of the beautiful scenery.

Bungee Jumping

Arenal has some great bungee jumping opportunities for travelers in search of adventure, and the Arenal Bungee’s Extreme Machine is bound to satisfy even the most hardened adrenaline junkie. Not only does the machine allow you to fling yourself into the void, but also to be launched forward into the air.

Rocas de Lava Cafe

Rocas de Lava, or Lava Rocks cafe, is the best cafe in town according to the locals, and it is a magnet for tourists too. The portions of food are very generous and reasonably priced, and the casado is simply a delight. The cafe is used to the presence of tourists, and it is possible to book volcano tours at the front desk.
